Abstract
Beta-thromboglobulin levels and platelet factor 4 levels are newer assay techniques
that are markers of overall platelet reactivity and release.
As such, several reports have suggested that either one of these two modalities may
be highly useful in aiding in a diagnosis of DIC as well as in monitoring therapeutic
efficacy with respect to the intravascuar clotting process. The authors observed the
plasma beta-thrombogloblin to platelet factor 4 and beta-thromboglobulin ratio in relation
to whole blood platelet count in diagnosed DIC, suspected DIC, and non-DIC groups.
The results reveal that both BTG/PF4 and BTG ratio were significantly higher in DIC
group than those of suspected DIC or non-DIC group, which reflect the increased
platelet activation in DIC. BTG/PF4 ratio was observed to have similar discriminating
power to antithrombin ¥² in evaluating DIC with a 16.9% of total misclassification rate.
